Last year, there were several people saying that cutting the police would cause riots, and cutting youth services in certain depressed areas of London would lead, eventually to social unrest (i.e. riots). One such article header is "Theresa May: We can cut police budget without risking violent unrest" from September 2010 and is being recirculated a lot right now for obvious reasons. Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister was quoted last year warning of riots if the Tories - with their track record of cutting services for the poor and taxes for the rich - were elected.

And then the Tories were elected and police numbers were cut and youth services were cut. And then there were riots.

I am hearing a lot about how Roman Polanski 'had sex' with a thirteen year old girl. I am reading comments from people about what was she doing at a party anyway, and how could he have known her age, he was drunk, and what was her mother thinking letting her go to such shindigs. And it was all so long ago and he's done some good films. And, and, and...

When I read the actual transcript, it became much more clear what had happened. )

This stark reminder echoes my own sentiments. It will be as triggering as what is behind the cut, and it links to this grand jury testimony. It is in no way ambiguous.

This is one way rape gets made more palatable. If a journalist says he 'had sex' with her, it implies she was willing and enjoyed it. A reader may think she lied about her age. When you read what happened, it becomes clear just how false that picture is.

Roman Polanski did not have sex with a thirteen-year-old woman. Roman Polanski raped a child. Call it what it is. If you see someone papering over rape with a euphemism that implies consent, call them on it. Comment on it. Say something. Help stop making this sort of crime acceptable-if-you're-famous-enough. You don't have to get angry, you just have to be pedantic, and hell, geeks are supposed to be red hot on accurate terminology.

In a fit of my usual self-centeredness, my cares have all been about Biting Midges, which are teeny, teeny, tiny little mosquito-like flies the size of fleas with a very, very itchy bite. They're a major pest in the West Highlands of Scotland, Australia and apparently parts of Horwich. I'm used to the non-biting sort, so I only found it mildly annoying when dozens clustered eagerly over my arms and face. In Nottingham, they generally just want a break before they use your body heat for cool and sexy thermals to wander round and round in. But these ones fly first class and like a refreshing drink before they go up again.

I can't take antihistimines, generally, either. Yay. Hydrocortisone cream helps a little.

I say all this, while Sessifet is hobbling about with quite an amazing round missing patch of skin and flesh. It is to shaving cuts what the Grand Canyon is to river valleys. I still have a scar from a shaving cut of similar depth and smaller magnitude.

I'm vaguely aware tennis is going on, somewhere. Otherwise I am avoiding the news assiduously, fairly sure I will otherwise only get upset, both at what is being covered and what isn't. This does include the Iran election mess. Quite a lot of the time I am not even aware of the weather. I am aware that Torchwood is doing a play every day on Radio Four, so after The Now Show, I am off to Listen Again.
