I haven't even congratulated him for the job offer yet. He is being unhuggy towards me just at the moment, I can't think why...

I should post, shouldn't I? I did get over it, but when I got back online, another RaceFail had broken out and it ate all my spoons - that and getting my life back together as regards clean clothes and food and things.

It's the Wrede book, which, in itself is only one small book, but the spin-off discussions are large and (IMHRO) worth having because Brave New World is a sci-fi trope that comes up a *lot*, and it's not a neutral one.

It's one small book, but I am still breathless at her comment about no North American Indians to prepare the land for human habitation. *slaps head*

I haven't seen anything like all the discussions, and I haven't seen Brave New World brought in before; I need to really look over it all.

I don't think anyone has brought it in, it was just a phrase I was fumbling for that seemed to fit. Manifest Destiny is the one that gets used in discussions.

Oh yes, that comment is so full of fail. I like Wrede, she did *so much* to make me feel at home on rec.arts.sci-fi.composition, back before Freidman and his ilk drove me out with their hate rhetoric. I am hoping she will learn something from this. There were *other* problems, too, such as how she split magic up into three schools, Europoid, Africoid and Orientaloid (although those are not her names for them) along old-school racial lines.

Bujold too - Bujold was full of fail but I saw signs that she had begun to get it, that not everyone who reads sci fi is white, and not everyone who reads sci fi (even those of us who *are* white) want to read about Generic White People all the time.

Ah, I see. I have never read Wrede at all, so this is the first time I have even heard of her.

I have not seen what Bujold said directly, only heard what others said about it: I got the impression she was drawing her conclusions from SF cons (where the members do tend overwhelmingly to be white). Someone, I think it was fjm, pointed out that the really interesting stuff in the Seventies was being done by people who weren't white and/or not straight — although I have to confess when I read some of it I didn't always know they were (say) black and gay.

I went to the original thread - she hasn't been misrepresented that I've seen, in what she said or why she said it. Since she said she was taking a few suggestions on board, she's been quiet on that thread. I don't expect you to read the thread, btw, but if you start looking into it, this will save you some googlespoons.

And yea, getting life together is hard, although if it's *all* I do, I then get bored. The Big Stuff is spoon-eating, but it gives me a lot of my sense of community. And nifty new books to read when I am spoonless...

Yes, exactly! I have a lot of trouble getting across to people that the bigger stuff is essential for mental well-being. In a lot of ways, I wasn't up to Eastercon (as was possibly obvious, you saw me when I was really despooning, I think), but it was *good* for me.
